Board to board connector

2022 12/14

Board-to-board connectors are used to connect PCBS without cables. Board to board connectors save cable space and make them suitable for systems with limited space. PCBS can be connected using parallel or vertically configured connectors. A connector that connects two PCBS in a stacked configuration becomes a sandwich connector. However, the term is sometimes used to describe vertical or side-by-side PCB arrangements. These arrangements usually occur in motherboard-subboard arrangements, where the emphasis is on parallel arrangements.

Specifications to consider when selecting a sandwich connector include separability, mechanical requirements (such as stack height and tolerances), constraints (such as brackets, brackets or case slots and frames), and type of mounting. Separability depends on a number of factors, such as whether the connector is separable or permanent, the number of fit cycles required over its lifetime, and the maximum and minimum insertion forces required. Operating temperature and humidity should also be considered. EIA 700AAAB is the standard for sandwich connectors.

A backplane is a set of connectors that are parallel to each other, so each pin of each connector is linked to the same relative pins of all other connectors, forming the connector bus. Backplane systems are widely used in computer and telecommunication systems because of their flexibility and reliability. The backplane system is used to connect multiple plug-in cards along a single backbone to form a complete backplane system. The signal generated by the transmitter reaches the receiver through multiple connectors. Equipment used in high-speed applications requires a backplane system with high signal integrity. In the gigabit backplane channel design, the backplane and related pin fields are the basic parameters.

As the data rate increases, the backplane channel can attenuate the transmitted signal. These channels cause inter-symbol interference (ISI), reflection, and crosstalk. Cross talk and reflection introduce noise that reduces signal amplitude and reduces signal edge rate, further worsening channel jitter performance. At high data rates and long distances between channels, signal integrity becomes worse.

Connectors for backplane systems should provide good impedance matching and shielding. The connector should also be able to withstand multiple insertion and removal cycles of the circuit board.
